Follow Friday - blog by Kasandra Rose

I met Kasandra Rose through 23andMe
after we had both done autosomal DNA testing there.

is Kasandra's blog which is "loaded" - yes, loaded
with tons of information about DNA testing.

I could go on and on about her blog,
but instead I will let you just "mosey" (in Texas, we
mosey) on over to DNA Genealogy
and check it out yourself!

Happy Hunting and
Most of All "Happy Friday"!

Maternal Monday - Frederka Sophie Louisa Trenkman Ziegenfuss

Frederika/Friedricka Sophie Louisa Trenkman

Birth: 04 Oct 1846-Germany
Died: 05 Mar 1920-Wichita Falls, Wichita County, Texas
Buried: Riverside Cemetery, Wichita County, Texas
Funeral Officiant: Pastor William Utesch, Trinity Lutheran
Church, Wichita Falls, Texas
Source: Trinity Lutheran Church, Wichita Falls, Texas, Old Book,
No page, recorded birth and death date of Friederike Ziegenfuss as noted above)

She came to America from Prussia in 1885 on the
Ship Moravia from the port at Hamburg to New York, United States.
Source: New York Passenger Lists, 1851-1891, NARA M237, roll 489,list 1027, line 16, number 271, online-Ancestry.com

When Fredreka came to America with husband,
Gottlieb Ziegenfuss, they had children:
Louisa, age 15
Otto, age 13
Benno, age 9
Hugo, age 8
Mathilda, age 7
Ernst, age 5
Helene, age 3.

Gottlieb Ziegenfuss died in 1890; buried
Watson Cemetery, Arlington, Tarrant County, Texas

Fredreka then moved her family to Eastland County, Texas
and on 14 August 1895 married Freidrick Graefe.  Freidrick’s
wife, Amelia Grafe, had died on 21 August, 1894.

According to our family stories, old Mr. Graefe did not allow any
Oo Fredreka’s children to live in their household, except
for young daughter, Rosa Ziegenfuss, who was a child.

Whether Fredreka divorced old Mr. Graefe, or just left him,
we don’t know.
But by the time of her death in 1920,
she was living with her son,
Otto Ziegenfuss’ family, in Wichita Falls,
Texas, and she was using her married
name of Ziegenfuss and not the Graefe name.

Fredreka in her old age

I hope that one day we will
locate Fredreka's family
back in Germany!  I am sure
she has kinfolk living there even today!

Happy Ancestor Hunting!

Died:   19 Apr 1909 - Roby, Fisher County, Texas
Parents:   Jordan Ham (father)
                 Frances A. "Fannie" Parker (mother)

Jennie HAM TEEL was my Great-Great-Grandmother.  We would have probably called her "Mama Teel" or "Grandma Teel" had I known her!

In 1880, Jennie Ham lived with her parents, Jordan and Fannie Ham, in Centreville, Bibb, Alabama.  She was 7 years old.  In the household of "Jourdon Ham" and "Fracey Ham" were the other children, Mary, William, Johnie, and Marren [Marvin].  Jennie is listed as "Jane".   [Year: 1880; Census Place: Centreville, Bibb, Alabama; Roll: 1; Family History Film: 1254001; Page: 315B; Enumeration District: 003; Image: 0639.]

1890 finds Jennie in Dekalb, Bowie County, Texas, and marrying William Perry Teel on the 22nd of September.

By 1900, she and William Perry Teel had gone to Indian Territory, OK.  They lived in Township 4, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory.  Children included Mamie, Chas (Charles), John and Elsey (Elsie).  [Year: 1900; Census Place: Township 4, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory; Roll: 1847; Enumeration District: 0125; FHL microfilm: 1241847.]

Sometime after the 1900 census, William and Jennie Teell left Oklahoma and brought their family to Fisher County, Texas.  On April 8, 1909, 36 year old Jennie Ham Teel gave birth to Bertha; and days later, on April 19, 1909 Jennie died.  Jennie is buried in the Roby Cemetery located right outside of north Roby in Fisher County, Texas.

Glitzy and Old - Treasures Repurposed: Backwuds Barbee and photographer Kristi Gerdes

Today is not a "typical" genealogy post.  But it does have to do with old stuff, and I don't know one genealogist that doesn't relish "old stuff"!  I wanted to show you some beautiful, glitzy items that at one time were the pride and joy of someone's mother, grandmother or maybe even great-grandmother!

I applaud those people who take the time to find old jewelry and then re-create it into a one-of-a kind piece.
And I know several ladies that have this talent for re-creating.

I want to introduce you to
Krista Shepard, who is the creative mind behind

Looking over her creations, I often wonder
what stories these pieces of jewelry could
tell if "they" could speak?  Don't you?

Beautiful stories, sad stories, love stories?
I could go on and on, but won't.

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words!
Backwuds Barbee..where pieces of time collide!

The pictures happen to be taken by my very
talented daughter, Kristi Gerdes,
of Kristi Gerdes Photography.  An English teacher by
profession, this Mama is proud of her picture-taking skills, too!
You can find Kristi at Facebook or contact her at:
kristigerdesphotography@yahoo.com

Oh, and as of June 2013, check out Backwuds Barbee's
ad (with picture by Kristi Gerdes photography) in
the Country Issue of People Magazine...

Hope you enjoy!

Happy Dreaming!
